When you arrive at beautiful Bald Head Island by ferry or boat, you are greeted by majestic oak trees; then you see the striking Ball Head lighthouse rising from the trees. The Bald Head Island lighthouse, affectionately known as “Old Baldy” by the locals gets its name from denuded dunes on its south beach which resemble a bald head. The lighthouse is painted on with acrylics on a large sand dollar (my canvas from the sea) that measures approximately 5.5 inches.
