When you arrive at beautiful Bald Head Island by ferry or boat, you are greeted by majestic oak trees; then you see the striking Ball Head lighthouse rising from the trees. Your eyes are not playing tricks on you; the lantern room is actually off-center from the center of the tower. The Bald Head Island lighthouse, effectionately known as “Old Baldy” gets its name from denuded dunes on it south beach which resemble a bald head.
