The Biloxi lighthouse, built in 1847, has had more female keepers than any other lighthouse in the U.S. The lighthouse survived Hurricane Katrina although the brick lining inside was damaged significantly. After the hurricane, the lighthouse was draped in the American flag to to signify the community’s resolve to overcome all calamities. The lighthouse was featured on the Mississippi license plate from 2007 – 2008, and in July 2009, the City of Biloxi celebrated the issue of a stamp bearing the Biloxi lighthouse.
