The original lighthouse was built in 1803 to warn mariners away from dangerous shoals due to hundreds of shipwrecks off Diamond Shoals known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” The new lighthouse, a stunning black and white spiral structure, was built in 1870, and at more than 200 feet tall, holds the record as the world’s tallest lighthouse. Due to beach erosion, the lighthouse was moved in 1999 and now sits 1600 feet from the ocean’s edge. The relocation project was named the 2000 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
